Admirable Deodorant

Before you wonder – this post isn’t sponsored.  No one has asked me to write about this product.  I do so because I’m a very satisfied and happy customer having used the product.  The company probably don’t even know I exist!

Other products are available to buy (apparently)…

I really don’t get excited about every day toiletry products.  Things are bought because usually we either need them or…no I think it’s usually just because we need them.

Toiletries are really nothing to get all that hyped about.  But like other areas in my life that I’m simplifying and making better, I’ve cut out or changed all my every day toiletries to ensure they are either organic, not tested on animals, or in some cases have created home made replacements (to some success).

Of all the rooms the bathroom is one of the more expensive places to change products in.  Shampoo is not cheap, body lotion not cheap and soap, well actually soap has been the cheapest change with no compromise to quality.

And then there is deodorant.

Testing products

There have been some studies but no conclusive evidence to suggest links between deodorant parabens and breast cancer  but the idea behind it makes you wonder.  Though that wasn’t my only reason for chucking out my usual roll on it was another good incentive.  I cannot not have deodorant.  As much as I try not to perspire (coz I is a lady), running and walking about most days is going to have it’s own effects.

I originally found one organic product on a supermarket shelf and while I was unhappy with the price being over £3, it didn’t seem to last very long so was getting quite disheartened by it.

Over time (and in another shop) I came across a deodorant called Salt of the Earth by Crystal Spring.  A British company founded in 1993 who produce a range of natural skincare products.  I picked the deodorant up noticing the price and put it straight down again.  No way was I forking out £4.85 on a deodorant.   And off I went.

I came back to the shop a week later and looked again at the product.  I read the description:

How does it work?
Applied to damp skin after washing, the natural Crystal Deodorant Classic leaves a thin layer of natural mineral salts on your skin. These mineral salts are a natural deodorant and inhibit the formation of body odour on your skin, providing you with long lasting protection.

The Salt of the Earth Classic Crystal is a stick of pure Potassium Alum, a natural mineral salt that has been used as a deodorant for hundreds of years. Our 90g Classic Natural Deodorant will last and last if dried after use, giving you unbelievable value for money, as well as long-lasting protection against body odour. A smaller Travel version is available for when space is tight and weight must be kept light. Our deodorants are unscented so they won’t interfere with other fragrances like perfume or body lotion.

Long and last didn’t seem like a very specific time period to me and how could just salt on it’s own really stop me from repelling my fellow colleagues after walking to work on a hot summer day?

So I put the product down and walked off again.  Yeah, no one really wants to ever come shopping with me – I never buy anything!

Still something nagged me – what if it really worked?

Back to the shop I went and threw caution to the wind.  Deodorant was my last product to change.  If it didn’t work it would mean I’d need to get creative (or work outside at my place of employment).

The Results

I bought that deodorant back in November last year and guess what – I’m still using it – 9 months on!  Daily.

If that doesn’t impress you then get this – it works!  I’m still of course perspiring (coz I is still ladylike) but unless I’m hitting the gym for daily use it’s actually better than any brand on the supermarket shelves.

My reasons for being such a big fan

We’ve all (myself included) been duped by intensive marketing and impressive adverts on the TV.  Most deodorants are targeted as an intense smelling man/woman magnet.  Or that they are chemical-less when in actually fact if you look at the list of ingredients most of the words listed are hard to pronounce let alone understand.

The idea behind a deodorant is to block your pores thus stopping any smell from taking place but if the chemicals used to block those pores can actually have long lasting effects on your body why the hell would we want to use them?

As much as I don’t like spending money (the Boss will concur with that statement), I will happily pay for anything that is either good quality or will last a long time.  If it’s both then it’s a winner.

Salt of the Earth is most definitely a money winner.  It’s about as natural in substance as you can get to put on your body and it does what it says – it gives all day protection from body odour (I hate that word).

Plus, it’s a British company (I know!), the products (nor ingredients) are tested on our furry friends.

I was genuinely curious to know where the salt content came from so asked Crystal Spring who sent this reply:

The salt that goes into Salt of the Earth natural deodorants is mined from the ground, in this case the primary aim of the mining is to find other minerals but alum is dug up and collected at the same time. It isn’t a rare mineral and can be made synthetically.

So at least I know that not only is it a sustainable but it’s a borne out of other industries thus making it a good use of a by-product.

All in all a very pleasing product to buy and use.  I’m certainly a returning customer and if you’re even in the business of changing deodorants then I’d say give this one a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Have you ever ditched a branded shampoo?  What’s been your experience of the changes you’ve made in the bathroom?  Do you get fed up of the hyped up advertising around toiletries on the TV?

  1. Thanks for the link and the information. For those of us on the other side of the pond, I was able to find the company and its product through a major on-line distributor. Similar to your experience, I havel looked, read and left. I expect soon to go back, read some more, and leave once again. Then the day will come to replenish my personal products, and this product will be remembered. Thanks!

    1. I bet there are quite a few great (and probably quite small) American green brands creating good clean toiletries over the pond. If you come across any please feel free to share on here.
      Thanks for reading 🙂

    1. Thank you for your link. It’s always very useful to hear readers’ opinions on these subjects. What I’ll do is contact Crystal Spring and see if they can give further detail other than that found on their website – http://www.crystalspring.co.uk/articles/alum-a-traditional-natural-deodorant.
This deodorant I discuss in my post is made of aluminium, a natural variety rather than the man-made type (as your link suggests). The natural alum as described on their site should be more effective on the body without causing any harm.

      1. The article is very long but this sums it up more or less…
“While these crystals are probably better than using a conventional antiperspirant, they are clearly not aluminum-free – they still pose a possible Alzheimer’s risk and contribute to background toxicity in your body. It would seem best to exercise the precautionary principle at this time and avoid these crystal-based alum antiperspirants. Personally, I have not used antiperspirants for over 30 years, once I realized that they were actually causing the stains in the underarm area of my shirts and that wasn’t due to my own sweat. That was a major clue to me to avoid them.

All I do is use simple soap and water and that seems to work well enough that my friends and relatives do not tell me I have any offensive body odor. I typically will wash under my arms in the morning and after I work out.

This approach has served me well for over three decades. However, if you find you need a more aggressive approach, then try a pinch of baking soda mixed into water as an effective all-day deodorant.”
I am more or less at the point where I’ve made so much research on the effect of products on the skin that I feel safer without but I can understand that it’s a difficult concept for some 🙂
Wishing you all the very best in your journey!

  2. I too have discovered the Crystal Spring deoderant and can concur that it lasts a loooong time. I bought the travel version (to save money in case it doesn’t work) before Christmas and it is still going strong.

I am however concerned about using the rock because of the aluminium content – which was the initial reason I stopped using commercial deoderant.

A long long time ago I read an article by a nurse who wanted to stop using commercial deoderant but didn’t want to offend her patients. She found that sodium bicarbonate worked for her.

Maybe I’ll investigate the one that Lush make, once I’ve finished the rock. Mmmmm…

  3. I’ve got a similar one at home called Pit Rock. I wanted to ditch the synthetic stuff, but have found this particular one doesn’t quite stand up to a night out dancing or my daily hike up the hill to work. I have completely ditched the big brands for skin care though and can wax lyrical for ages about Akamuti products. Have you switched your shampoo & conditioner for a natural alternative? I’d be curious to know how you got on as I tried a few years ago with quite terrible results. I’ve settled on L’Occitaine stuff, which isn’t a massive brand, but isn’t exactly all natural either.

    1. Yes I switched my shampoo and conditioner for a while to using very natural bicarb of soda and vinegar for conditioner. It actually worked really well as a natural resource but I got a little annoyed that I could never get a bulk buy of the bicarb (without spending a fortune on p&p), so now I use Holland & Barrett’s Dr Organic range. It’s rather expensive so wait until they do offers before I stock up! It’s not completely 100% natural but it’s about as natural as you can get in a pre-made bottle!
I love L’Occitaine products but as you say not 100% natural either. :-/

  4. I just came across Chagrin Valley organic shampoos, soaps, conditioners, moisturizers and deoderants – here in the USA – I placed my order last night and can’t wait to try!
