Admirable Deodorant

Before you wonder – this post isn’t sponsored.  No one has asked me to write about this product.  I do so because I’m a very satisfied and happy customer having used the product.  The company probably don’t even know I exist!

I really don’t get excited about every day toiletry products.  Things are bought because usually we either need them or…no I think it’s usually just because we need them.

Toiletries are really nothing to get all that hyped about.  But like other areas in my life that I’m simplifying and making better, I’ve cut out or changed all my every day toiletries to ensure they are either organic, not tested on animals, or in some cases have created home made replacements (to some success).

Of all the rooms the bathroom is one of the more expensive places to change products in.  Shampoo is not cheap, body lotion not cheap and soap, well actually soap has been the cheapest change with no compromise to quality.

And then there is deodorant.

Testing products

There have been some studies but no conclusive evidence to suggest links between deodorant parabens and breast cancer  but the idea behind it makes you wonder.  Though that wasn’t my only reason for chucking out my usual roll on it was another good incentive.  I cannot not have deodorant.  As much as I try not to perspire (coz I is a lady), running and walking about most days is going to have it’s own effects.

I originally found one organic product on a supermarket shelf and while I was unhappy with the price being over £3, it didn’t seem to last very long so was getting quite disheartened by it.

Over time (and in another shop) I came across a deodorant called Salt of the Earth by Crystal Spring.  A British company founded in 1993 who produce a range of natural skincare products.  I picked the deodorant up noticing the price and put it straight down again.  No way was I forking out £4.85 on a deodorant.   And off I went.

I came back to the shop a week later and looked again at the product.  I read the description:

Long and last didn’t seem like a very specific time period to me and how could just salt on it’s own really stop me from repelling my fellow colleagues after walking to work on a hot summer day?

So I put the product down and walked off again.  Yeah, no one really wants to ever come shopping with me – I never buy anything!

Still something nagged me – what if it really worked?

Back to the shop I went and threw caution to the wind.  Deodorant was my last product to change.  If it didn’t work it would mean I’d need to get creative (or work outside at my place of employment).

The Results

I bought that deodorant back in November last year and guess what – I’m still using it – 9 months on!  Daily.

If that doesn’t impress you then get this – it works!  I’m still of course perspiring (coz I is still ladylike) but unless I’m hitting the gym for daily use it’s actually better than any brand on the supermarket shelves.

My reasons for being such a big fan

We’ve all (myself included) been duped by intensive marketing and impressive adverts on the TV.  Most deodorants are targeted as an intense smelling man/woman magnet.  Or that they are chemical-less when in actually fact if you look at the list of ingredients most of the words listed are hard to pronounce let alone understand.

The idea behind a deodorant is to block your pores thus stopping any smell from taking place but if the chemicals used to block those pores can actually have long lasting effects on your body why the hell would we want to use them?

As much as I don’t like spending money (the Boss will concur with that statement), I will happily pay for anything that is either good quality or will last a long time.  If it’s both then it’s a winner.

Salt of the Earth is most definitely a money winner.  It’s about as natural in substance as you can get to put on your body and it does what it says – it gives all day protection from body odour (I hate that word).

Plus, it’s a British company (I know!), the products (nor ingredients) are tested on our furry friends.

I was genuinely curious to know where the salt content came from so asked Crystal Spring who sent this reply:

The salt that goes into Salt of the Earth natural deodorants is mined from the ground, in this case the primary aim of the mining is to find other minerals but alum is dug up and collected at the same time. It isn’t a rare mineral and can be made synthetically.

So at least I know that not only is it a sustainable but it’s a borne out of other industries thus making it a good use of a by-product.

All in all a very pleasing product to buy and use.  I’m certainly a returning customer and if you’re even in the business of changing deodorants then I’d say give this one a try, you won’t be disappointed.
